A postcard village with a 5000 years of history will strike the visitor when it first comes into view.

Located in the Northeast part of Algarve, Alcoutim is located on the margins of the Guadiana river with Spain right across its banks.

Being a border town, it had to be fortified and protected by its castle built in the 14th century and strategically located at the top of the hill. This is an area very rich in historical events where  battles and treaties took place.

One of Alcoutim characteristics is the peaceful atmosphere and clean air.

This region is strongly preserved and with a rich archaeological content including some menieres.

Also of interest is its distinct crafts including its wool blankets and dolls.

Alcoutim gastronomy is marked by pork, lamb and river fish and outstanding desserts with basis of honey, figs and almonds.

If you are visiting Algarve and have a car, this area is certainly high in the list for touring.
