The village is characterized by its row of low rise white houses and has many restaurants serving local food as well hotels and self catering apartments.
Due to its pristine blue flag beach and the Cabanas Island, Cabanas de Tavira has become a very popular tourist destination.
Its coast and island are inserted in the "Ria Formosa Natural and conservation Park".
What started as a basic area for storage of fishing equipment to support the tuna fishing industry with only a few tackle huts (cabanas), went to gradually having some fisherman to build permanent residences growing to what is today a thriving quaint village.
